Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean 600m: The Value Argument in Modern Diving Watches

Reference 217.30.42.21.01.001 is, on paper, difficult to argue with. Six hundred metres of water resistance. A Master Chronometer movement certified to 15,000 gauss. A ceramic bezel, a helium escape valve, a screw-down crown, and a 42mm case that wears comfortably on most wrists. It sits well under eight thousand dollars.

The Planet Ocean line was introduced in 2005 to give the Seamaster family a genuine professional diver above the 300m Diver — a watch built to specification rather than to a price point. It has kept that character through three generations.

The Caliber 8900

The Co-Axial Master Chronometer caliber 8900 is a modern automatic with twin barrels, a free-sprung balance, and a silicon balance spring. Power reserve is approximately 60 hours. Master Chronometer certification is granted by METAS, the Swiss federal metrology institute, and is applied to the fully assembled watch — case, dial, hands and all — rather than the loose movement. It is a harder test than chronometer certification alone, and the anti-magnetic threshold of 15,000 gauss is high enough that the watch is effectively immune to anything in daily life.

Practical Notes

The ceramic bezel insert does not fade or scratch the way aluminium did on earlier generations. The unidirectional action should be crisp with no back-play. At 42mm with a moderate lug-to-lug, this wears smaller than the specification suggests — worth trying if larger divers have felt unwieldy.
