Rolex GMT-Master II 116710BLNR: The Original Batman

The nickname arrived before the watch was even in shops. When Rolex released reference 116710BLNR in 2013 with a blue and black Cerachrom bezel, collectors named it the Batman within days, and it stuck. This is the original — the discontinued 2013–2019 reference on the Oyster bracelet, not the later 126710BLNR that Rolex initially released on Jubilee only.

That distinction matters more than it might sound. The 116710BLNR was the first two-colour ceramic bezel Rolex ever produced, and it took years of development because ceramic does not naturally accept two colours in a single insert. Rolex's solution — a process of transforming part of a blue insert to black through the addition of a metallic compound — was a genuine technical achievement, and it is why no other manufacturer offered anything comparable at the time.

The Caliber 3186

This generation runs the caliber 3186, with a Parachrom hairspring and an independently adjustable 24-hour hand that lets you jump the local hour without stopping the watch. Power reserve is approximately 48 hours. It is a robust, well-understood movement with a long service record.

What to Check

On any 116710BLNR, look at the bezel first — the two-tone ceramic should show a clean transition with no chipping at the edges. Confirm the bracelet is the correct Oyster with the Glidelock clasp, since a swapped bracelet affects both value and wear. Verify the 24-hour hand jumps cleanly through a full rotation.

Condition and Set

2017 production in used, very good condition, complete with original box and papers. Discontinued references with full sets have generally held value well.
