Rolex GMT-Master II 116710BLNR "Batman" — 2016

Reference 116710BLNR is the original Batman: the 2013–2019 GMT-Master II on the Oyster bracelet, with the blue and black Cerachrom bezel that gave the watch its name. It is the reference collectors mean when they say "the original Batman", as distinct from the later 126710BLNR that Rolex first released on a Jubilee bracelet only.

The two-colour ceramic insert was the technical story of this reference. Ceramic does not naturally accept two colours in one piece, and Rolex's method — converting part of a blue insert to black through a metallic compound before firing — took years to bring to production. Nothing comparable existed elsewhere when it launched.

The Caliber 3186

This generation runs the caliber 3186 with a Parachrom hairspring and an independently adjustable 24-hour hand, so the local hour can be jumped without stopping the watch. Power reserve is roughly 48 hours and the movement carries 31 jewels. It is a well-understood caliber with a long service record.

What to Check

Look at the bezel first: the transition between blue and black should be clean, with no chipping at the edge of the insert. Confirm the bracelet is the correct Oyster with the Glidelock clasp — a swapped bracelet affects both value and how the watch wears. Cycle the 24-hour hand through a full rotation and check it jumps crisply.
